The Washington Post claims that Obama is using "signing statements" EXACTLY as George W. Bush did, to circumvent the law. My perusal of his very infrequent statements - far, far fewer in number than his predecessors - shows that while occasionally he expressed disagreement, he has not voided the laws Congress passed. In opposing the mandate by Congress to keep Guantanamo open, he has done no more than express his considered opinion that this is wrong. He has NOT closed Gitmo and circumvented the Congressional directive. So with Executive Orders. He has kept well within his Constitutional rights. He has not usurped Congressional authority but done what he is legally empowered to do.

The public false equivalence between President Obama and, especially, George W. Bush is a lie of the worst magnitude. Using Constitutional powers in Constitutionally approved ways is not the same as creating mandates that flout the law, do violence to 'the piece of paper" Bush declared the Constitution to be, and harming the nation.

Data show President Obama is measured, thoughtful, restrained. Beyond that his actions have been lawful and Constitutional. That fact is what separates him from several others whose actions never engendered the hate and violence his LEGAL acts have done. No escaping the extremism and racism underpinning the accusations against this president. That is what we fail to heed when we don't look at the content of what he has done, however minor, however rare.Churchlady320noreply@blogger.com
