It started with Goldwater, but it became the core of every Republican campaign in 1980. When Reagan attacked "the government" he meant and his voter understood that to be the government that forced them to abandon formal segregation.<br /><br />What's different now is that Trump showed that the Republicans no longer needed to speak in code and construct deniability. Being brazen about their bigotry about it was actually a plus. And that's because the entire American press/media decided that if open & hostile racism draws eyeballs, then they will present it as a legitimate political position. James E.
