Did Obama implement the Dream Act via executive order?

The wingnuts think so.

On Friday, the Obama administration issued a memo announcing that federal immigration officials do not have to deport illegal aliens if they are enrolled in any type of education program, if their family members have volunteered for U.S. military service, or even if they are pregnant or nursing.

This new policy of “prosecutorial discretion” was quietly announced on Friday afternoon, and completely ignored by the mainstream press.

What happened is that last Friday ICE Director John Morton issued a memo (pdf) directing his staff to use "prosecutorial discretion" in the "apprehension, detention and removal" of undocumented people based on several criteria.

The following positive factors should prompt particular care and consideration:

veterans and members of the U.S. armed forces;
long-time lawful permanent residents;
minors and elderly individuals;
individuals present in the United States since childhood;
pregnant or nursing women;
victims of domestic violence, trafficking, or other serious crimes;
individuals who suffer from a serious mental or physical disability;
and individuals with serious health conditions.

This sounds exactly like what many of us on the left have been asking the administration to do until we get a Congress that will pass the Dream Act. But once again, it looks like yet another tree in the forest fell without anyone noticing.

  4. I have no propblem with people who are veterans or members of the U.S. Forces being accepted for the process for LEGAL immigration, however, for the rest of the people, what part of the word ILLEGAL do you not understand? Why should the rest of us have to pay for the rest of our lives for there bad decisions and poor judgement? What gives the illegal immigants the right to come to our country illegally and DEMAND to break our laws. If we went to their country as an illegal immigrant, we would be jailed immediately.

  6. I heard about this on the news and as this says, it was a quick blurp but indicated that OUR United States government has stopped the deportation of over 300,000 illegals (I won't call them illegal immigrants because they're not - they're criminals). But to anyone who thinks this is okay, let me tell you that in November 2010, I contacted the Mexican consulate's office in Arizona. I told them I was going to Mexico for a vacation, but didn't have a passport and I wanted to know what would happen to me if I was found in Mexico without a passport? Per the Mexican consulate's office - I would immediately detained, jailed, processed and DEPORTED within 24 hours. And yet we're supposed to give citizenship to over 15 million illegals. Go figure. Our Social Security will go bust even faster once these people realize they can apply for Soc Sec disability and costs to American taxpayers will rise to pay for their free housing, food stamps, assistance with heating, etc. I am a 13th generation American - I used to be proud of America but now I am simply disgusted with it.

  7. How about "ILLEGAL" immigrants be granted a work permit then they would not be a burden on "tax payers".... "Americans" are so funny... Their great grandparents came to America on boats, now they want to tell the man on the boat behind them that they cannot come....SMH....
