What does it tell you that Romney/Ryan have to run a campaign on lies?

Steve Benen has made one of the most important contributions to this election season by weekly chronicling Mitt's mendacity. Last week's edition brought confirmation from Joe Klein:
I can't remember a candidate so brazenly allergic to facts. What a travesty.
And Kevin Drum:
This really is a post-truth campaign. It's different. It's one thing to be nasty. All campaigns are nasty. It's one thing to twist and distort and mock. Every campaign does that too.... But this is different. This is a presidential candidate just baldly making stuff up on the assumption that nobody will ever know.
Of course there are the daily "little lies," but if you think back over the last few months there were the campaign's themes - ALL of them based on lies.
  1.  That the stimulus was all about "crony capitalism" when analysis found 0.001% fraud.
  2. The whole "you didn't build that" controversy which was based on an editing lie.
  3. The one about President Obama gutting welfare reform...another lie.
  4. The latest about ObamaCare cutting Medicare benefits to seniors. Check out this smack-down of that one.
You have to wonder what motivates a campaign to base its whole message on lies, don't you? The simple answer is that when voters know the truth, they reject their candidacy. Also notice that their lies and campaign themes are all distortions of what President Obama has done/said. They seldom talk about their own ideas/policies.  The interesting thing about that is that they obviously know that when voters are truthfully informed about their choices, Obama wins. Think about that for a moment...they KNOW that. Why else would they lie?

On the other hand, when President Obama talks about our choices, he points to the fact that they:
  1. want to give additional tax cuts to the wealthy
  2. have proposed turning Medicare into a voucher system
  3. want to get rid of regulations that would protect us from another financial meltdown
  4. said that we should have "let automobile companies go bankrupt"
  5. said that we should let home foreclosures take their course
In other words, he tells the truth.

So what this campaign comes down to is whether or not voters will be able to tell the truth from a lie. They're going to have millions of dollars to use to try to sell the lie. President Obama not only has the truth on his side - he has US. Lets get out there and do everything we can to spread the truth!

"'Romney and Ryan’s disdain for the working class'

Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate underscores the central question posed by this campaign: Should cold selfishness become the template for our society, or do we still believe in community?

Romney wanted the election to be seen as a referendum on the success or failure of President Obama’s economic policies. Instead, he has revealed that the campaign is really a choice between two starkly different philosophies. One could be summed up as: “We’re all in this together.” The other: “I’ve got mine.”
