The President speaking openly about his evolution on the topic provided a huge boost to the public at large being to openly admit they were fine with marriage equality. The people in his administration who lobbied him and VP Joe Biden who forced the issue during the campaign get to take a bow, too. They pushed the boulder a good deal further up the hill. It is the gay community and their relentless efforts to change public opinion who get the lion share of the credit. The work done through the media and entertainment in the 80s and 90s helped grow an entire generation of people open to the idea that gays are people and deserve the same rights and protections under the law as everyone else. All those people who bravely came out of the closet and refused to live their lives in shame were the backbone of the movement. Public opinion takes a long time to change--good for everyone who stayed with it and continue to stand up to the bullying and backlash.
