Pivot

President Obama pivoted immediately from the debt ceiling to jobs and the economy.

Both parties share responsibility in Washington. And both parties need to share responsibility for improving this economy. Its not a Democratic responsibility or a Republican responsibility, it is our collective responsibility as Americans...

It shouldn't take the risk of default, the risk of economic catastrophe, to get folks together in this town to do their jobs. Because there's already a quiet crisis going on in the lives of a lot of families and a lot of communities all across the country...That ought to compel Washington to cooperate. That ought to compel Washington to compromise. And it ought to compel Washington to act. It ought to be enough to get all of us in this town to do the jobs we were sent here to do.

We've got to do everything in our power to grow this economy and put America back to work. That's what I intend to do and I'm looking forward to working with Congress to make it happen.

  1. Fantastic, Hopefully the Democrats can get back on message and pound this point home. The GOP said they had jobs plans, where is it?

  2. It's going to be very difficult to argue for additional stimulus after we've gone through months of constant talk about deficit reduction.

Many people are probably going to see it as contradictory when viewed in light of the debt reduction bill that is supposed to put us on a path to reduce non-defense discretionary spending to Eisenhower levels.

  3. Additional stimulus isn't the only way to create jobs. My top suggestion would be to get the trade deals passed - especially the one with Korea.

  4. The highest estimate for the Korean trade deal I've seen is 70,000 jobs created, while the United States International Trade Commission says there will negligible or no net gains in employment and the Economic Policy Institute estimates the loss of over 100,000 jobs.

Why I'm getting optimistic about this election

It's hard to over-state how much the Des Moines Register's Selzer poll shook things up by showing Harris/Walz leading in Iowa. None ...
