Light and Dark

If you haven't already seen it - please take a couple of minutes to watch the video over on the right - American Prayer. At about 2:20, here's the lyric that jumps out at me:

Let's not kick out the darkness...
Make the light brighter

It reminded me of a parable I read years ago (I've searched high and low for it lately on the internet and can't find it. So if anyone knows a source, PLEASE share it). It's about a little old lady who hates the dark and spends all night sweeping it away. Finally she's so tired that she falls asleep just as morning light is beginning to dawn.

In my experience, that is a profound truth about the dangers of getting too caught up in trying to combat the darkness. It can consume you and leave you no time for light-spreading.

And with light...it only takes a crack.

  1. I only heard of Jack Layton, the Canadian social democrat and opposition leader, this week upon his death. But here is an incredible quote by him:

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."
