Steven Benen has been talking for a while now about the clinic Jon Huntsman is putting on about how to take on Mitt Romney. ReplyDeleteI've heard several people speculate that the problems with this year's GOP contenders could result in a brokered convention with a backroom nomination of a candidate. Jeb Bush has been the general speculation as that candidate.
ReplyDeleteBut what if it's Huntsman those backroom dealers are looking at? I don't know much about him, but what I've heard is that he is very conservative, but pragmatic; intelligent; seems to have a scandal-free background; and appears to be more solid and have more integrity than Romney.
GOP voters may not like him now because of his connection to the Obama administration, but if he were put forward as the candidate, they might rally around him much more readily than they would Romney. I would find him a much more challenging opponent to Obama than any other the other candidates, including Romney, because he has qualities that would attract independent voters.
