Country First

We've all noticed that a while ago Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that his number one goal was ensuring that Obama would be a one-term president. The reason that was so damning is that - with clarity - McConnell was stating that he put politics ahead of country. Its also something we went on to see the Republican Party live out as they did things like threaten to put the global economy at risk in their hostage-taking over the debt ceiling deal. So they walked McConnell's talk.

We're never going to have a political system that tackles the very real issues that face this country (and globe) as long as that is the priority for Republicans. Yes, we can mitigate that by giving President Obama stronger majorities in Congress. But our politics will always be debased and the outcomes compromised when power is an end in itself.

In the Republican debate Saturday night, Mitt Romney stood with Senator McConnell when he criticized John Huntsman for serving as the Ambassador to China in the Obama administration.

I think we serve our country first by standing for people who believe in conservative principles, and doing everything in our power to promote an agenda that does not include President Obama’s agenda.

I do NOT support Huntsman for president. But I will support him in condemning Romney and suggesting that this kind of thinking is at the root of what is wrong with America right now.

  1. Thanks for pointing this out, Smartypants.

BTW, that debate was Sunday morning. Huntsman replied to Romney's criticism, from the Saturday night debate, that Huntsman worked for President Obama. Huntsman said in the Sunday debate that he served his country, just as his two sons in the U.S. Navy were serving their country, regardless of the president's party.

Romney then replied as you quoted here ... which raises the question: does Romney think military members have served their country for the past three years?

    Good day and good nuts.

  2. Normally, Huntsman is pretty boring, but he had a really strong moment here. And I agree with his message. I am sick and tired of Republicans constantly questioning people's patriotism.

Also too...I know we will be seeing that queasy grin Romney's uses when his ass is being handed to him often. Obama is going to slice and dice that empty suit.

  3. I was with him until he said that crap at the end about defeating Obama and approving this message. He showed his weasely Rethug tail and totally negated his message of 'Country First."

  4. The written part is where it talked about defeating Obama, not the actual words out of his mouth, but still, he approved this message.

I'm not sure what you'd expect from him. He's running to be the Republican nominee.

As I said, I don't support him in that. But I still would like to see more like this from R's.

  6. ChickenHawk: One who was too chicken to volunteer or accept the draft, but has the balls to send other's kids to the wars. And then lauds themselves as being pro-military and patriotic.

More or less 10 members of congress have close relatives (defined as nephew/neice or closer) that have served in war zones. That's right TEN. Out of 538.

If Romney had been in Congress, he'd be part of the 528. But then the same could be said of pretty much the rest of the field.

Why Christian nationalists fear freedom

For years now a lot of us have been trying to understand why white evangelical voters remain so loyal to Donald Trump. I believe that the an...
