Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying...Don't punish me with brutality. Talk to me, so you can see what's going on...Oh, you know we've got to find a way to bring some understanding here today.

What's Going On
It's been a while since I listened to this song. I did so today and - due it its renewed relevance - it brought on a few tears. Let's all take a few minutes to listen to Marvin.
Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying...Don't punish me with brutality. Talk to me, so you can see what's going on...Oh, you know we've got to find a way to bring some understanding here today.

Years ago there was an outstanding show, "Frank's Place" some may remember. It was wonderful with rich and admirable and funny characters who were real people. It may have been the only show ever that dealt with Black people really well. The side characters who were white were equally real and interesting. One two-part episode was about a young man with great musical talent but little else who got drawn into being a drug mule to finance his music. The most compelling scene was his anguished deliberation about what he was doing to his neighborhood and to himself all for money. As he agonized over his acts, this song 'What's Going On" played in the background. I will never forget the power of the scene coupled with this amazing music. It was masterful.
ReplyDeleteInner City Blues and Mercy Mercy Me from that same album are also still as relevant.
