A "slush fund" for me, but not for thee

The President of the United States has apparently "settled" a law suit against his own administration for the leak of his tax returns during his first term. Here is how it is being described (emphasis mine):

It is a cartoonishly evil, corrupt act in defiance of all ethical and democratic norms that is to transfer nearly $2 billion of federal funds ($1,776,000,000, to be precise) into a slush fund over which Trump will have ultimate control. Further, the fund — at least on its face — is aimed at giving money to people such as those prosecuted, convicted, and pardoned over their actions on and surrounding January 6, 2021.

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who just lost his primary for failing Trump's loyalty test, had this to say about it (emphasis mine):

Wait a second, I just came off the campaign trail. People are concerned about making their own ends meet, not about putting a slush fund together without a legal precedent.

Meanwhile, most Republicans are simply trying to dodge the question when asked about all of this.

I was reminded that six years ago, the tables were turned and Republicans were claiming that then-President Obama had set up a slush fund. It came about two months after the horrific BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Obama administration worked with BP to set up a $20 billion fund to compensate victims of the disaster. Republicans had a field day:

Republicans have come out strongly against it -- with the sum total of charges being that it will turn into a political slush fund procured through dirty Chicago thug tactics that will be paid out to ACORN.

That incident stuck out to me because a few months later, while campaigning for then-Senator Harry Reid, Barack Obama gave a master class in how to use humor against a political opponent.

Doug J of Balloon Juice has a social media account called "NY Times Pitchbot," which he uses to poke fun at the media's obsession with bothsidesism. I think I'll pitch him this one:

Whether it's to compensate victims of corporate malfeasance or the perpetrators of an insurrection, both parties have accused the other of creating "slush funds."
