Boehner/Cantor looking desperate

Do you think these guys are maybe a little worried about what's coming on Thursday night?

The two top House Republicans want President Barack Obama to huddle with congressional leadership before his Thursday jobs speech to discuss potential areas of bipartisan agreement.

In a letter to the president Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) laid out several areas of common ground, including passing three long-stalled trade agreements, reducing regulation and funding certain infrastructure projects.

The letter, coming the day Congress returns from its August recess, seems to strike a slightly new tone. Cantor and Boehner have spent the bulk of Obama’s term criticizing his policies, but as Congress reconvenes, they seem to be putting more of an emphasis on cooperation with the administration.

A slightly new tone? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

This from the guy who less than a year ago couldn't utter the word compromise.

I don't know about you, but I smell a little desperation in the air.

  1. I think they are just trying to punk the president.
I hope he does not meet with them. I'll be pissed if he does.

  2. More likely it is an attempt to delay the President past the pre-game window so he will loose audience share. If it were me, I'd offer them a post speech meeting.

  3. What I hear is them parroting Obama's approach - which means they think it's working with voters. I wouldn't trust them for a minute. But its interesting to see them trying to out "adult" the only adult in the room.

  4. ebogan63 here.

I hope he doensn't meet with them either, but if he does, I won't be pissed. By this stage in the game, it is who he is, whether we like it or not he will always take the high road.

  5. "I think they are just trying to punk the president."

At this juncture Cantor and Boehner know that's not even close to possible. They have seen that spine of ramrod way too many times to even go there.

No this is about negotiating the best terms of surrender they can get.
