Abercrombie and Fitch: Exclusion is cool

This really pisses me off.
Anyone who’s been to Abercrombie & Fitch in the last few years has probably noticed that they don’t carry XL or XXL sizes of women’s clothing because they don’t want overweight women wearing their brand.

According to this popular teen clothing retailer, fat chicks will just never be a part of the “in” crowd.
A&F CEO Mike Jeffries explained it this way:
“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told the site. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.
In case you're wondering, this policy only applies to women. The article points out that A&F carries XL and XXL for men "to appeal to large athletes."

Lately I've been spending some time enjoying the long musical career of Janis Ian. This kind of shit reminds me that some things haven't changed in 40 years.

  1. Not surprised. This guy has been proclaiming that shit for years. It's one reason I don't go anywhere near Abercrombie and Fitch-that and their overpriced rip offs of Old Navy clothes that fall apart as soon as they are washed.

  2. So, they're the beautiful people. A &F aren't cool and will never be cool. Popular kids in high school? People that talk fashion never mention A&F. They aren't even at the lunch table in the real world. I never thought much of them but since they want to be ugly I say feel free to throw stones.

  3. I have no idea what this Jeffries character is going on about. So, I'll just paraphrase the late great George Carlin; Abercrombie & Fitch ain't cool they're f-ing chilli and chilli ain't never been cool.

  4. Crap like this is why I don't reminsce about my high school years. I have fonder memories of college.

But then again, I get the impression that A&F aren't as cool as they would like to be among today's high school kids. There's a lot of competition out there to get the dollars of the "in" crowd and I've never seen a crowded A&F store. However, I've seen other high-end stores get more of these types of customers. Sure, Jeffries could argue that this is due to their exclusivity, but even that doesn't wash. This is because the "really cool" kids...you know the ones that actually start the trends that the more popular kids end up following...wouldn't shop at A&F to begin with. There are too busy trying to be original and not copy what's already been done (like Abercrombie & Fitch does all the time).

  5. Something tells me that Mike Jeffries wasn't one of the cool kids when he was in high school.

  6. I've been trying for years to live past my High School years and this guy holds them up as the model for how the world should really be?

    Fuck that shit.

  7. Since when is Abercrombie and Fitch considered "cool"? I don't know a single youngster who has ever uttered the name Abercrombie and Fitch and the word "cool" in the same sentence. ROFLMAO. However, I imagine the term "uncool" will shortly become synonymous with A & F.
