The significance of the day was evident on the smiles of faces of the American Indian women on hand at the US Department of the Interior's Sidney R. Yates Auditorium where President Barack Obama signed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, commonly known as VAWA.
The smiles were on the faces of the Native women because VAWA contained tribal jurisdiction provisions that are now part of federal law.
